DANA SCHUTZ: IF THE FACE HAD WHEELS Neuberger Museum, Purchase College, Purchase Ny SEPTEMBER 25-DECEMBER 18, 2011

Neuberger Museum, Purchase College, Purchase Ny SEPTEMBER 25-DECEMBER 18, 2011

At almost 16 square feet, no picture could do this or any piece in this exhibition justice. Although, this was one of my favorites as I sauntered through the Neuberger (the museum on my Purchase College campus) just last week.  Even my sturdy 5’9 self felt small *almost* in the same way I did when at the Gagosian a week before at the Richard Serra exhibition, but also dwarfed by the vivid Color (yes, it was defiinitely capitalized COLOR) that made anything else in the room vanish, including myself. I saw her view on the Michael Jackson autopsy, the last man on earth, a woman using her teeth to strip a floor, and a cannibal eating himself, face-first, all extracted from her “hyperactive imagination” (Rosenburg) which is likened to that of David Foster Wallace’s.

Dana Schutz shares with you a ten-year survey of her bizarre imaginative juxtapositions via a vibrant pallette and a succulent imagination in large-scale passion.  She states,“I embrace the area between which the subject is composed and decomposing, formed and formless, inanimate and alive.”

The exhibition runs until December 18, at the Neuberger Museum of Art, will feature approximately thirty paintings and twelve drawings created by the artist from 2001 to the present.  “Dana Schutz: If the Face Had Wheels,” is also featured in the NY Times by Karen Rosenburg.
